EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.

  • The nation of Palau will consent to accept a limited number of migrants from the US in exchange for additional aid, following signing a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has initiated legal action seeking the stripping of a political figure’s name from a well-known performing arts center in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil align with a wider ideology in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with past foreign policy actions.
