The United States monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve
The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts
In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Inflation has moved up and remains moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.
Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves
The Fed usually analyzes labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the count of employment gains created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.
The number of jobs added to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.
Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown
Though the bureau was set to publish September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release once the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for September that showed that prices are going up, although gradually. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
