One Piece Ends a 27-Year Tradition in 2026

It's the end of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation announcing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has run continuously for more than 25 years and included numerous non-canon storylines. Starting in January, once the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the anime will take a quarterly hiatus until April, when the next major arc begins.

New Release Strategy

Going forward, One Piece will produce two seasons every year for a cap of 26 episodes. The studio explains this will help the anime to “explore further into the core of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more material, tempo, and timing of the source material.” However, producers end by promising “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which means more related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to premiere in the interim.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The One Piece anime previously took a six-month break that started in late 2024 and concluded in early 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to improve the animation quality and let the comic to build a lead to prevent a faster anime pace and lengthy recap episodes. The show couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has managed to supply fans with countless action sequences, high-quality animation, and less filler than previously.

Embracing Seasonal Format

While a few summary installments sprouted up during this season, the positive effects of this updated approach greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the story. This additionally allows the original work, which is currently in the thick of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the anime. According to the news, this may result in one episode of the anime adapting a single manga chapter, with some instead handling more material or more to make up for time.

This concludes of a generation for anime, as the epic saga is the last big series to ditch the old-school way of creation, which prioritized being on air for almost the entire year. This explains why classics such as Bleach, and of course One Piece have numerous side stories, and the standard of the art can vary widely between one episode and the next. Nowadays, series creation is organized in cours, with one or two maximum releasing each annually, allowing for better quality and more faithfulness to the source material.
