Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Displacement Reported

The island nation has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials stated that the powerful weather system triggered extensive sudden floods, storm surges, mudslides, and destructive gale-force winds, prompting the relocation of 1.4 million residents nationwide.

Extensive Destruction and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews recorded floodwaters reaching the tops of houses and homes washed out by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel saved 14 individuals who were trapped on the roof surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official stated. “A father also called in panic, saying his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We saved him along with four family members.”

By Monday, authorities confirmed two fatalities: one from drowning on the island and a second individual killed when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The super typhoon was downgraded to a severe tropical storm early Monday while moving over the main island, where the capital is located.

Per meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is projected to lose strength while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency indicated efforts were ongoing to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed hundreds of lives with another 135 missing prior to advancing to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for the missing persons had to be suspended recently over risks for rescue workers.

Global warming is causing cyclones stronger and common. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to impact the nation this year.

Scientists report that the rate of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has risen doubled in the past twenty years.

Global assessments indicate that severe weather events result in approximately millions in dollars in damage for the Philippines every year.

The Philippine president issued a state of emergency on Thursday due to the severe damage from Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
