The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

We present a challenge for long-term couples who enjoy scary movies: Settle in with your loved one and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 has now made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. On the surface, it might appear like standard body horror, but within Together resides a profound examination about our choices in loving each other.

An Introductory Film Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for a decade. Having wed in reality in 2017, the actors infuse a special spark to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The story starts when Tim and Millie move from the urban environment to the countryside for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s largely where the cliches end. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the two fall into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence takes hold of the couple. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past simple connection.

The complete narrative is a methodically building of scares, interspersing bits of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes amidst something horrific). Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and wraps them up in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and removed from his network of friends. He dreads the idea of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he never makes Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie grapple with the type of challenges that are inherent in long-term unions after ten years. Deep down, they still love one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these concerns of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism never feels overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama work together in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that single viewers have seen the movie as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Conversely, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could function as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the ending sow anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your significant other and state, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can experience today.
